Undergraduate programmes: Frequently asked questions

What qualifications are required for entry to the Department's degree programmes?

While most students are admitted on the basis of three A-Levels, we also accept a wide variety of other British and overseas qualifications. Grade requirements for A-Levels and some other qualifications are detailed on the Entry Requirements page.
We will consider applications from mature students on a variety of criteria including experience. Candidates with industrial or commercial experience and/or non-standard qualifications are welcome to apply. All applications will be considered on their merits.

What happens if I don't achieve the entry requirements?

If we have not filled all our places with students who have achieved the required grades, we may be able to offer admission to some students who are one grade below the requirement. This would be at the discretion of the Admissions Tutor.

Can I visit you to find out more about your programmes?

If you are offered a place we will invite you to visit us on special Open Days between December and April. You may also be able to arrange an individual visit at another time if you contact the Mathematics Admissions team.

Can I defer my entry?

Yes, there is no problem but we would like to know as soon as you have decided and, if possible, before the 'A' level or other results are released.

What level of computer literacy is assumed?

None, but obviously, whatever you can gain before the programme will assist you.

Which computer should I buy?

See the advice from the University's IT Services. All rooms in halls of residence have an internet connection. The University also has computer labs at several locations around campus, some of which are available for students' use 24 hours a day.

What about sandwich courses, sponsorship and industrial placements?

Students wishing to take the sandwich option do not have to have sponsorship or an industrial placement organised when they arrive. Opportunities for year out placements are advertised regularly and the Department assists students in finding placements.

What's the employment record for graduates from the Department of Mathematical Sciences?

Data indicates that only 3.5% of graduates were unemployed. Many of our graduates go on to further study. Our industrial links mean most Loughborough graduates tend to go into employment.

How big is the programme group?

In the first year there are usually around 200 students registered on the various single and joint honours programmes administered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

What percentage are mature students?

Usually the percentage for the undergraduate population is between 5-10% depending on the programme. Mature students bring great experience to the classroom and are popular with fellow students and staff because of their enthusiasm, experience and life skills.

What are the rules concerning car parking?

Due to restricted parking spaces on campus, parking permits are not granted to first year students, or students who live less than one mile away from their University department. These restrictions do not apply to students with disabilities. Application forms for a parking permit are obtained from the Security Office: +44 (0)1509 223751. A system of wheel clamping and fines does exist for illegal parking and all vehicles are parked at the owners' risk. Car parking for University business is also banned in many of the streets near the campus, and in any case the local residents use the relatively few spaces available there.

Am I guaranteed a place in hall for my first year?

Yes, if you make Loughborough your Firm choice after receiving an offer from us. Information on halls of residence and other accommodation can be found from the Student Accommodation Centre.

...and in 2nd/3rd years etc?

You are not guaranteed to get a place in hall in your second or final year unless you are a student with a disability. International students are offered a place in the previous hall for at least two years of their stay at Loughborough. Second year students tend to find a house in town with their friends, and the Student Accommodation Service can help with this.

How much does my hall place cost?

Details of the halls and the room costs can be found from the Student Accommodation Centre.

Can I choose what kind of hall place I get?

You will have the opportunity to express a preference between full board and self-catering and may specify single room or shared room when responding to your offer of a hall place. However, a guarantee of what type of accommodation you will ultimately be offered cannot be made. In the very few cases where students are unhappy there will usually be an opportunity to move early in the first term.

What is your research selectivity rating?

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 100% of the Pure Mathematics research and 90% of the Applied Mathematics research in the Department of Mathematical Sciences was rated as being of "international standard". The Department has active research groups in Dynamical systems, Geometry and mathematical physics, Global analysis and partial differential equations, Linear and nonlinear waves, Mathematical modelling, Stochastic analysis, and Mathematics education.

What is your teaching quality assessment?

The Department was rated excellent (22/24) for its teaching in an External Subject Review (October 2000). Loughborough has been rated independently as the one of the Top 5 Best Teaching Universities in the UK (according to the Sunday Times).

Is there a ???? society at the Student Union?

A full list of Union clubs and societies and Athletic Union clubs is available via the Students Union.
