Winner of the Christmas Challenge-2009

Congratulations to Nicola Hart (first prize), Magda Zajaczkowska (special prize) and Sam Swift (special prize) who won this year's Christmas Challenge. For more information see here.


Winner of the Loughborough University Graduate School Prize for the Faculty of Science

Congratulations to Yue Wu (Mathematical Finance graduate 2009) for being awarded the Loughborough University Graduate School Prize for the faculty of Science. This prize comes with a cheque for £400. Miss Wu is now studying for a PhD in Mathematics at Loughborough University.


Marie-Curie Initial Training Network MULTIFLOW

Loughborough University is coordinating a consortium of 15 groups from nine European institutions that has obtained a 6.2M Euro grant to investigate "Multiscale complex fluid flows and interfacial phenomena" (2009-2012). The team at the Department consists of Andrew Archer, Fathis Bribesh, Lubor Frastia, Mark Robbins, Uwe Thiele (coordinator), and Desislava Todorova. For more information see here.


Research Assessment Exercise

  • 100% of the Department’s Pure Mathematics research is of an international standard (rated 2*, 3* or 4*) in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

  • 90% of the Department’s Applied Mathematics research is of an international standard (rated 2*, 3* or 4*) in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.


National Student Survey

The School of Mathematics is placed 4th for overall student satisfaction in the Mathematics and Statistics section of the 2008 National Student Survey.


National Teaching Fellowship

Prof Tony Croft has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy (see the press release for more details).


Leverhulme Trust grant

Dr Eugénie Hunsicker and Dr Alexander Strohmaier have been awarded a research grant of £111,941 by The Leverhulme Trust for a project entitled "Spectral Analysis, Dynamics and Quantum Physics on Noncompact Manifolds".


Visiting professorship

Prof Roger Grimshaw has been awarded a grant of £67,500 by The Leverhulme Trust to finance a Leverhulme visiting professorship for Prof. Efim Pelinovsky.


EPSRC grant

Dr Gennady El has been awarded an EPSRC Mathematical Sciences Small Research Grant of £19,576 for a project entitled "Isospectral kinetic equation for solitons: integrability, exact solutions and physical applications".


INTAS grant

INTAS have awarded a grant of €150,000 for a project entitled "Mathematical Modeling of Mixing and Dispersion Effects in the Shallow Waters of the Coastal Zone” to a consortium of six institutions: Institute of Applied Physics, Niznhy Novgorod; Lavrentyev Institute of Hydrodynamics, Novosibirsk; Institute of Computational Technologies, Novosibirsk; Institut de Recherche sur les Phénomènes Hors-Equilibre, Marseille; Department of Environmental Engineering, University of Genova; Centre for Nonlinear Mathematics and Applications, Loughborough University. The Loughborough team consists of Prof Roger Grimshaw (Team Leader), Dr Gennady El and Dr Karima Khusnutdinova.


EPSRC grant

Professor Sasha Veselov has been awarded an EPSRC research grant of £221,159 for a project entitled "Algebra and Geometry of Generalised Quantum Calogero-Moser Problems and Applications".
